Hamley & Co. Saddle -
Here’s one of the BEST finds out there
today in terms of western saddlery. This is a genuine HAMLEY
& COMPANY, full-floral carved western saddle. This Hamley was made by the legendary
saddle maker DUFF SEVERE while he was still with the
company. Duff was a WWII hero who fought and survived at
Pearl Harbor before embarking on his saddle making
endeavors. The original bill-of-sale and Hamley certificate come with
the saddle providing full authenticity- no invalid claims
here- none. The condition of this saddle is GREAT in all
regards. It’s ready to use, or place in your living room-
your choice. There are so many “extras” concerning this
saddle it’s hard to mention them all. The seat is 15 ½”
making all the more rare. It’s actually 16” if you measure
from the base of the horn, but due to the slight forward
pitch of the horn, I’ll be safe and call it a 15 ½”. EVERYTHING possible is full tooled even
down to the rope strap, back girth and billets, cantle
binding, original off-billet, and the flat-plate rigging set
in the 3/4ths position- ALL ORIGINAL and
in fantastic shape. I’ve owned/seen saddles by virtually all
the true contemporary greats, and now that I’ve seen,
studied, and ridden in this rig made by Duff Severe, I can
see why Duff’s the only saddle maker to have his work
recognized by the Smithsonian Institute. Duff is
accredited by the Smithsonian, and rightfully so, for
having turned saddle making from a craft into an art.
The construction, tooling, and overall craftsmanship on
this saddle are light years ahead of much of what is
being called “custom-made” or “hand-made” today. The
duckbill horn cap, carved, of course, is a whopping 5”
across. It’s built on a Hamley roper tree. The bar
spread would be very much comparable to a modern 93
degree bar spread.

N. Porter Phoenix, Arizona Saddle -
16” (from the base of the horn to the front edge of
the cantle) N. Porter ranch/roping saddle, Phoenix,
Arizona. It’s an “A” fork swell, which is basically an
early version of the contemporary wade style that’s so
popular. It’s the biggest seated “genuine” N. Porter
I’ve ever owned. This saddle still has a clear maker
mark in the seat, behind the cantle, on both fenders,
and bears 80886 under the near jockey as a serial
number. It has beautiful patina on the full, southwest
floral-carved leather. This saddle is in very good
condition inside and out, right down to the rock solid
bullhide wrapped tree. The original fleece is in very
good condition, with everything else, making it ready to
go to work on the range, or park it in your living room
as living conversation piece of days gone by. It’s ready
for either. The huge Mexican horn is 5” across the cap,
and the beautiful bell-style carved stirrups really set
off its appearance. It’s extremely comfortable to ride
in, and has a bar spread a little wider than any of the
Porters I’ve owned in the past, making it a very usable
saddle on most horses today. I can’t say enough about
this beautiful rig. Of all the N. Porters that have made
their way to my ownership, this one excels them all by a
long shot. Your chances of EVER finding a similar
Porter, in this shape, are between slim to none.

Bona Allen Parade
Saddle ~ One of the Originals Made in Buford,
Georgia
Here’s a Bona Allen (a real “BA,” made in Buford,
Georgia) parade saddle for sale. The saddle is in
immaculate condition and has seen very little use. Many
years are left in this rig. The hand floral tooling is
crisp and deep throughout. It also has a roomy 15 1/2”
comfortable, padded seat. There are no spots missing on
this one. The fleece was professionally replaced due to
moth damage, with the stitches going right back into the
original holes. Only the best bark-tanned woolskin was
used- never anything synthetic. The strings and stirrup
leathers were replaced as well, leaving everything else
original. This saddle has full quarter horse bars,
unlike many vintage parade saddles, and will wonderfully
fit about any of the modern breeds. The in-skirt rigging
is sound, too. The headstall, collar and corona pad
match beautifully, but are not original. And, most
importantly, the tree is sound and tight. This saddle is
ready for active use, or to park in your living room as
one very nice showpiece.

available. Going to a Bona Allen Museum! |

One of the Originals Made in Buford, Georgia
This is one OUTSTANDING saddle!! It is in near perfect
condition! I have owned and seen many, many Bona Allens,
all from Buford, GA, and have NEVER ran across one just
like this one. It has flat plate rigging, something
rarely seen in Bona Allens. Saddle is 99% ORIGINAL!
Fleecing and leather is in EXCELLENT condition!

A RARE find~ Dale Harwood
(Trails End Saddle Shop, Idaho Falls, ID) saddle! 14
1/2" padded seat rough out. Dale Harwood, the sole owner
of the TRAILS END SADDLE SHOP, is the “Senior Statesman”
of all the saddle makers in the world- bar none! For one
thing, Dale quit taking orders a few years ago, with a
backlog of saddle orders that would take him between 10
to 12 years to complete. The serial number is 6457. I
contacted Dale and he made this saddle for a government
trapper in 1964.

Bona Allen ~
One of the Originals Made in Buford, Georgia. This was a prime example of what an
original Bona Allen was all about. This was a complete,
fully floral carved set.

This is a 16 1/2"
Hamley and Co. saddle in LIKE NEW condition!

This is a 15 1/2" Hamley and Co. saddle- paperwork
received from Randy Severe. I currently have this saddle
in my small collection, and it's in near mint condition.
You'd never have noticed, but I laced the big bell
stirrups to match this one. The original stirrups are
oxbow, which I personally do not like.
Saddle no longer available. |

Here's a rarity- a
17" G. Lawrence ranch saddle. It honestly rides
more like a 16", though. I still have this rig,
which I refleeced using ONLY the real thing, with
stitches in the original holes. It's in excellent
condition, and very comfortable. The leather on these
vintage saddles is so much better than most of the
leather out there today! |

Antique Marshall Field Saddle ~ This
saddle was in excellent condition. The leather was
very supple and thick.

16" Bona Allen (Buford, Ga.) saddle
pictured here. Bona Allen saddles have been made in
three different places all together. I have not owned
any of them but the ones made in Georgia- nor would I.
In-skirt rigging, and the floral designs are beautiful.
These were good, light-weight pleasure saddles.

Oklahoma City Saddlery saddle pictured here with a 15" seat. It's got a
huge 4 1/4" Mexican horn, and a very comfortable
groundseat.
This one is no longer available. |

These makers were
heavily UNDERRATED- Ruebrush Bros. saddlers from
Arizona. This was one of the stoutest made saddles-
tree, leather, etc., I've personally ever rode in.
Beautiful southwest carving really set this saddle off!
This one is no longer available. |

N. Porter swell fork
roping saddle- 16" seat. A huge duckbill horn made
this saddle an eye catcher. Personally, I do not like
the rigging so far up front, though, as it tends to
"gall" a horse. Still, a beautiful, fully
hand-carved saddle. This Porter is no longer available,
but I still have a 15" Porter with a flat-plate
rigging, which I consider to be the toughest made
saddle I've ever ridden in! It never got better than a
Porter!!!
This one is no longer available. |

Here's a BEAUTIFUL
parade saddle, that I believe to be an unmarked Boyt. It
has the matching breast collar, bridle, and corona pad
to go with it, (not pictured). This rig has a bullhide
tree, and it's very heavy. I still own this saddle, and
it's hardly ever been used. Excellent leather, tooling,
etc. 15" seat.
This one is no longer available. |

A 16" Hamley and
Co. swell fork roping saddle is shown here, with full
